Ethernet Over Copper
Ethernet Over Copper or EoC widens availability. Ethernet Over Copper is changing availability of services by utilizing existing copper circuits to deliver much higher bandwidth capability. The T Carrier technology has been around for many years and until now – it was the only solution for some areas. EoC is a game changer for many companies that are not located in a city center. We have all heard of Ethernet and Metro Ethernet and how cost effective large bandwidth can be. The problem with these services is that they are delivered over fiber and they can be very expensive to build out. Now we can offer much higher speeds at very good pricing with EoC.
EoC compared to Metro Ethernet. EoC is not everywhere but it certainly is in more places than Metro Ethernet. The differences are caused by the transport facilities utilized by each. Metro Ethernet is delivered over fiber and your business must be on a fiber ring or in a lighted building. If you are not in a facilities serviced area, you must either go without or pay very expensive fiber installation fees. EoC uses the same copper facilities that are used for T1 implementation and therefore is a much more cost effective installation.
Comparison of available speeds between EoC and Metro Ethernet are determined by loop distance from the switching office for EoC. Metro Ethernet is tuned for the maximum speeds wherever it is installed. EoC is still dependant on the loop quality and distance. From a practical limitation point of view, EoC will normally top out at about 50 megs and Metro Ethernet can go to the maximum support equipment speeds.
Ethernet Over Copper throughput. Earlier we talked about Internet response time and how it is affected by bandwidth and latency. Internet Response Time is technically measured in milliseconds but logically measured by your employee Internet happiness. When the Internet response is slow, your employees are probably not happy.
Throughput of EoC is one of the best services available for the price. Metro Ethernet is not everywhere. It is normally only installed in high density business areas (city centers). EoC is available anywhere there is good copper and a carrier that will support it. Several factors increase throughput on EoC. One of those factors is the proximity to the serving CO or Central Office. This is the local facility closest to your office location. The closer you are – the better the Internet Response time and EoC throughput.
Instant Quote is the fastest way to check facilities. Our automated systems can instantly determine if EoC or Metro Ethernet is available at your location. “Instant Quote” will automatically quote all viable options at your locations. The quote requires the full address where the service will be installed and when available – the first six numbers (NPA NXX) of any services installed at that location. In most cases – we can tell instantly – in some cases a technician must come to the location and check the facilities. In either case – we can always tell you what is available and provide up to 12 quotes so your company can compare prices and services.
Ethernet and Metro Ethernet are cost effective and fast. They both are some of the best services for the money in the market today. In most cases, your business must be located in a larger city and near the city center to get these services. Metro Ethernet is not available in all areas. Metro Ethernet and Ethernet are delivered over fiber to your offices and most of the time – your office must be located in a lighted building. It is expenses for the carriers to build out the fiber networks. Most carrier business models will build out only areas that have a high business density and this is how they make their money.
Lighted buildings are a bargain in most cities. Our automated online systems provide detailed lists of building that are Lighted (pre-wired for Ethernet) and that information is used in our “Instant Quote”. Companies that are located outside the city center may not have Ethernet available. A lighted building will normally provide a fast and inexpensive installation because the facilities are already wired and ready to go. Some Lighted buildings do not have all floors wired and this could cause a delay and there also may be additional expense for installation.
“Instant Quote” provides a comparison. Some Lighted buildings will have multiple Ethernet providers but most of them won’t. Carriers negotiate building access and they also attempt to gain exclusivity to ensure they can recover their installation costs. Almost all buildings will have multiple service options but normally only one Ethernet provider. This is where our “Instant Quote” can help your company find the best service for the best price. We provide up to 12 carriers on one quote so your company can compare and select.
